Electric Golf Cart Motor Break-In Procedure

This process is designed for both SERIES and SEPEX motors to prevent brush arcing and premature armature damage by allowing the brushes to properly seat with the commutator surface. Not following this process can and will cause damage to the motor that will not be covered under warranty. This process is HIGHLY CRITICAL to perform when lithium batteries or higher amp controllers are used, due to the fact that lithium batteries have a higher output of voltage and amperage that can cause rapid brush arcing within a short distance if this process is not properly performed.

If this is a Blue Hornet Custom SEPEX motor or a Bandit SEPEX Upgraded motor you  MUST have the proper Field Map/Motor Firmware installed in the Navitas TSX3.0 or the Alltrax XCT controller, these are the ONLY controller manufacturers that have our Blue Hornet SEPEX and Bandit SEPEX Field Maps/Motor Firmware or you WILL DAMAGE the motor and VOID the motor warranty!

Here is the recommended procedure:

  • Drive on Pavement:  Operate the cart on a paved surface.
  • Accelerate Slowly: Avoid hard acceleration during this period.
Vary Speeds: Do not drive full speed, do not maintain a constant speed for long periods. Vary from slow to half throttle and no more than 3/4 throttle during this process.
  • Drive for around 10 miles: Do this at various speeds like above mentioned.
  • Repeat the process: Continue driving gently until you have completed another 10 mile break-in period.
  • Monitor the motor: After the break-in, you should notice that the speed and torque increase, and the motor runs cooler.

Your break-in is now complete, drive safely!
